Review: Works as described - This 50:1 (well, if you are going to be a detail person it's 51:1) gearboxed NEMA 17 works as advertised. My project needed more torque than speed, and this did the trick. Overall, I'm really quite pleased. That said, there are a couple of things about this unit. First, it is quite heavy, considerably more so than the motor alone. I was surprised (maybe I shouldn't have been, but I was.) Second, as another reader pointed out, mounting holes DO NOT follow standard NEMA 17 design. Look at the user guide/spec sheet prior to final design. I don't see points (1) or (2) as negatives. Third, the motor is hard wired rather than have a detachable harness. Minor negative. Fourth, there is a small amount of play/backlash, but the device was within spec. At this price, performance is more than satisfactory. Overall I am happy and would certainly buy again if I needed a gearboxed stepper.
Review: Excellent Stepper Motor with Gearbox - This motor performed as expected. It was used with the "Steperonlinee CNC Stepper Motor Driver and was easy to set up. We used it to drive feed rollers for feeding 1/8 inch diameter rubber into a tubing cutter. This made it possible to accurately control the length of the pieces of rubber being cut off.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Will powering this motor with a 12v 2A power supply cause damage? The motor is rated for 12v at 1.68A**
A: No. The IV relation is fixed, meaning when you apply a certain voltage, a corresponding amount of current will flow. Due to the resistances of the windings, when you apply 12 V, only 1.68 A will flow by design. If you try to force 2A, then you will need a higher voltage.

With that being said, it is better to use a stepper motor controller IC instead of driving the motor directly from the power supply.

**Q: How noisy is this motor?**
A: It has been a long time since I purchased this gear motor and put it service, but do not remember it as being at all noisy.

**Q: How much torque is necessary to backdrive this gearbox? I am looking for a backdrivable gearbox.**
A: Are you refering to the gearbox alone or the gearbox plus the motor? The gearbox will simply amplify the amount of torque: if it's a 1:100 gearbox, for backdriving, you need 100 times the torque compared to backdriving the stepper motor shaft directly. As for the actual torque in the presence of the motor, it varies depending on how much current is flowing through the motor.

As a crude estimate, even without any current flowing, it is VERY difficult for an average adult male to backdrive the shaft of the gearbox.

**Q: Is this kind of motor (with planetary gearbox) necessary for the construction of a syringe pump, or can i use just a nema 17 stepper motor?**
A: I have used the nema 17 stepper motor for making a syringe pump with no gearbox using a leadscrew just fine for up to 25mL syringes. The leadscrew provides sufficient gearing itself. There is a good open source version on university of British Columbia. Possibly a larger syringe would necessitate a gearbox

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ NICE UNIT! Arrived on time and at a great price for a unit with a planetary gear box.
*by C***D on June 7, 2023*

Appears to be able to do my job. Have not yet applied power or control to it. I was surprised to see that the planetary gear set was made with plastic gears however. Seems to me that a 51:1 gear reduction may be able to build a lot of torque and gears may bear the brunt of that. Metal gears would be better, I think! But I will see soon. It will be used to provide input to a NV40 100:1 worm gear reduction gear box ( I need a very slow rpm output for a radio telescope drive system). I think this will work out ok.
