The standard charger has lights that illuminate only when a battery is inserted. This charger has a light on whenever it is plugged in to the power. I had left my old charger plugged in for long periods of time. I assumed that my batteries had worn out when I couldn't charge them anymore, so I recycled the old batteries and bought two new ones. The new batteries were partially charged when they arrived, so used both of them until they were discharged. Then I found that my new batteries would not charge. At first I though I got a couple of bad batteries, but I saw this charger on sale for a reasonable price, so I bought it to test if the old charger was broken and, if it wasn't, to have a second charger so I could charge both batteries at the same time. Once it arrived, both of the new batteries charged fully and I now know that the problem was the old charger had broken.
