I use it on a solid surface and have not had any issues. The stand is a bit wobbly if you move your laptop around on the desk a lot or moving cables in and out a lot of your laptop ports. But if you just need a basic stand on your desk, this should be perfect for you. I like the height level of the laptop screen when it is on the stand. I use an external keyboard and have had no issues. One word of caution, and if you need a stand where you will be using the laptop keyboard, not sure how well this will work as I don't think it is really built to stay in place while you are typing on the laptop. If you need this functionality, probably should spend a little more money to buy a more stable stand. One last thing, I love how portable the stand is because it all folds up quickly and is only 1/4 inch thick and about 10 inches long and fits easily into a laptop bag pocket to take it with you when traveling.
