At best it is a soft hiss. If you walk away this kettle will not warn you that your water is boiling. Other wise it is a nice pot.This is an update from the original review. I have reduced it 1 star and it should be a -2. If you are depending on the whistle to warn you that the water is hot, then I suggest that you have the fire department standing-bye. Twice now the water has boiled this pot dry.
