They last on average about 10 years before the tubing fails. The soft earpieces typically fail after about 5-8 years. I didn't actually need to buy new scopes. You can replace any component of a Harvey DLX. First off, this stethoscope has all the basics to complete in the "cadillac" class of stethoscopes. It's dual lumen, double headed, etc. But unlike Littman, this has a true bell (not the tunable diaphragm), and also has a novel corrugated diaphragm that is easily my favorite and excels at midrange frequencies. The headpiece is masterfully constructed, and with enough heft that you can use the bell correctly (low/no pressure). Secondly, it is very modular. You can change out the ear pieces, the diaphgram, the head pieces, everything. You can certainly do a "Ship of Theseus" on this and just replace every part of it if you like. If you don't use the bell ever, then take it off and swap it out with an infant diaphragm, or a flat adult diaphragm. You've got options. Third, there are improvements made in the last several years. The rubber is more compliant and a little longer than in the past. I had concerns about possible degradation of sound quality, but the newer ones work great and I don't notice any difference. I recommend this scope to any medical provider who needs to listen to hearts or lungs. It's worth the investment. However, if all you're doing is blood pressures, this scope is overkill.
