A lava lamp is a type of lamp usually used more for decoration than for lighting. Quiet flow of wax drops that form randomly mimics a lava flow. English Edward Craven-Walker created the first lava lamp model in 1963; initially called "astrolight" or "lamp Astro", it was presented at a fair in Hamburg in 1965, where entrepreneur Adolph Wertheimer became interested in the device. Wertheimer and his business partner Hy Spector acquired American rights to the product and started producing it as "lava quarrel" through a company called "Haggerty Enterprises" and doing business under the name "Lava World International". He had a great success among the young people of the 70s, especially in the hippie and alternative subculture. Today these lamps can be found in markets and gift shops. The glass on the lamp had several scratches on it when it arrived but as it was a child's birthday present we didn't have time to return.
