    What a burst of color!

Before I get into my review I would like to point out that I am not an experienced quilter. I mostly sew clothes, use a serger, and do not have a long-arm quilting machine. It wasn't until recently that I decided to give quilting a try. Coming from clothes, I am more intrigued by the modern quilting movement than the traditional quilt fabrics and designs. I have quite a lot of scraps and thought I could get them to work ;)In light of this, I ordered a few books-this one is by far my favorite. The projects are straight forward, the layout is clear and concise, and I like the fact that it shows you the block size and finished quilt size right up front. Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters: 60 Blocks + a Dozen Quilts and Projects! by Katy Jones (May 1 2012) doesn't tell you until page 130 that all the blocks in the book are 12x12. While the book features more complex designs, the layout isn't as appealing and user friendly as in Sunday Morning Quilts. The Practical Guide to Patchwork: New Basics for the Modern Quiltmaker, 12 Quilt Projects on the other hand seemed very promising from its cover, but the designs weren't nearly as colorful and bold as this book. I also ordered Quilting Happiness: Projects, Inspiration, and Ideas to Make Quilting More Joyful, which has this bright quilt on its cover. I had high hopes, but while the designs are intricate and the layout great, I didn't find a single project I was like "Wow, I want to make this!"Perhaps this is due to me being a novice and not experienced in the different designs, but Sunday Morning Quilts has this bright and playful approach that really appeals to me. I understand, that there are a myriad of quilters and just as many tastes and preferences. Personally I like this book best, followed by Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters: 60 Blocks + a Dozen Quilts and Projects! by Katy Jones (May 1 2012) because of its inspiring, modern take at blocks. Next comes Quilting Happiness: Projects, Inspiration, and Ideas to Make Quilting More Joyful because it offers techniques to awaken your creativity and reads more like a magazine. The one book I personally like the least is The Practical Guide to Patchwork: New Basics for the Modern Quiltmaker, 12 Quilt Projects, although I really like its introduction and skill section.Overall, if you like color, bright and bold designs and have a ton of scraps you would like to work into something this is the book for you. The designs are lovely and the book is very motivational to de-scrap-stash!

    Beautiful and easy

I think this book is absolutely beautiful. The quilts are so fun. I plan on making a few of them. This is just the kind of quilting book I was looking for. I heard about it on YouTube watching Cathy Martin with The Catbird Quilts! It’s a great book to have. I would definitely recommend it. I ordered a used one and it looks brand new.

From stash to scrap, practical inspiration

Wow what a wonderful quilting book--easily one of the best in my non-modest quilting library. The first section of five describes "modern" quilts with informal emphasis on color and design to show off your fabric. Imperfection is acceptable and perhaps even sought. Love the page about "Wonkiness/Wabi Sabi" and "Improvisation." The next two sections are about "scraps." Scraps are defined and differentiated from stash. Love the page about types of scraps (that are later used in the quilt projects): 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares, binding triangles, selvages, small snippets, snippets, strings, 2 1/2" strips, and skinny strips. The authors provide practical suggestions for sorting and storing scraps so you don't get overwhelmed. One actually wants to save and use scraps.Of course, every quilting book has a section or more devoted to quilting basics. Amanda and Cheryl devote an appropriate amount of space to this topic. This section is easily understood and readable. Unique to this book (at least i have not seen it elsewhere), are instructions for "Sewing a Slab of Fabric" where you artistically CREATE a new piece of fabric by sewing together scraps.Just when you think the book couldn't get any better, the last section devotes 80 pages to instructions and beautiful pictures for 15 quilts and one non-quilt project. Lots of variety and many techniques are represented. You probably won't win any quilting contests but you will win hearts and have lots of fun. As the authors say, " 'There are no snuggles if you don't sew."One more thing...the pages about "Cutting Fabric" and "Optimizing Your Fabric" will help you produce the most from your stash and keep it manageable by cutting off the unwieldy parts of remnants to build a useful scrap collection. It's not rocket science--just a very practical framework for managing and using your fabric.
