    Good resource for planning and carrying out a sleep coaching program

The Good Night Sleep Tight Workbook is a nice book for parents who don't want to let their child "cry it out," but don't have any idea of where to begin.  The first two chapters are a review of concepts from Kim West's first book, Good Night, Sleep Tight.  Ms. West breaks down each month from newborn to age 2 1/2 -5 and gives tasks and goals that should be accomplished along with sample sleep schedules.The Sleep Lady Shuffle, from the Good Night, Sleep Tight book is reviewed in chapter three.  This technique is the cornerstone of Ms. West's coaching plan.  Basically, it is gradually moving the location of your chair away from the crib until you are out of the room, thus teaching your child to fall asleep on his own.Chapter seven is about creating your plan. There are several sample plans with specific times for waking up, feedings, naps, bath, and bed times.  There are plans for babies who need feedings during the night, and older kids who do not.  Then there is a section with blank spaces which the reader could fill in to create his/her own plan.  These are thirteen-day plans (they could however, take longer).  At the end of the book, there is a sleep log where you can record your progress.Finally, in chapter twelve, there is a list of resources containing bedtime stories, books with information on childcare, books for new siblings, bedtime music, websites related to sleep, and information on postpartum depression.  This is all useful information.My children are older now, and sleeping through the night, but that certainly was not the case for the first two years of their lives.  I did try the Sleep Shuffle technique when they were babies for about a month.  I know that this technique does work well for a lot of people (I had friends who used it with excellent results), but it did not solve my children's sleep problems.  I will not give this book less than five stars, just because the sleep shuffle technique did not work for me.  It is well written, with easy-to-follow plans and suggestions.  If you are a sleep-deprived parent trying to get your child on a good sleep schedule where you are not a crutch for helping him fall asleep, then read this book.-Sherry Ellis, author of 
  
That Baby Woke Me Up, AGAIN

I have heard a lot of great things about this method and kudos to all the parents who successfully sleep trained their babies using this book.I skimmed through it and was going to try it out. However, after much thought and discussing with other parents, I ended up just letting my baby cry it out and leaving the room while watching him on the baby monitor. He only cried for 20 minutes (I was expecting up to an hour). He cried less each night and took him a shorter time to fall asleep. My life is so much better now that he can sleep on his own through the night (whereas before he was waking up 4-5 times). The method I used was really simple and it worked. I know many parents are against CIO but as a concerned parent, I did a lot of research before trying it and I honestly could not find actual evidence of any negative impact. Others may feel differently and that's okay.I really believe my baby would have cried longer if he had seen me near the crib, which is what is involved in following the steps in this book. My voice and presence provokes him to cry harder in any situation and only reminds him that he's not in my arms, and won't stop crying until he is. So if your baby is like mine, then this method might not be for you. Unless you can have your partner do all the work if he is okay to take on that burden. I'm not a baby sleep expert, but this is just my personal experience and my two cents!

My grandson was waking 6-10 times per night at seven months old.  He could not go to sleep without being nursed and then putting him into bed woke him up for more crying. My daughter and her husband were completely stumped. While I was visiting I bought her this workbook as well as the book that goes with it.  Together, in ONE WEEK, he was going down for 1-1/2 hour naps twice a day and going down for bed (from awake to asleep) in five minutes without being nursed, with just a little complaint (not hard crying) and by the time I left his dad or I  could put him down as easily as his mom.  The first step was separating nursing from falling asleep.  It worked.These are tried and true sleep training tips and they work.  It would be good to have the other book because she refers to it, but the workbook was great for quick lookups.  In the end my daughter didn't even need to keep a journal.  Her baby learned to fall asleep really, really fast.Now my grandson is nine months old, takes his naps on time, goes to bed at seven, has one big nursing in the night, goes back to sleep and sleeps until 7 a.m.Thanks, Sleep Lady!
