I needed a reasonably priced set of HT's (that's what hams call walkie-talkies) for line-of-sight communication ranging from 1/4 to 1/2 mile. In a quick test I was able to get clear and crisp audio at those distances. I image that with minimal obstruction you should get a mile of equally clear audio. Most people won't use sub-codes but they can be very handy and these radios provide 99. You also get call tones - also very handy. The buttons/controls are logically laid out and easy to use. I especially like the scan function - something usually found on more expensive radios. The size fits nicely in an adult's hand and should be fine for a child as well. The display is easy to read (an important feature to me).
