Review: Who Needs a Security Camera, Linked Ring Lights are Motion Direction Detectors - Pros: These are cool units, buy them in a group of 4 (on special) and you can install them via QR code scan, then attach them to the inexpensive Ring Bridge (included in the package deal) via the Ring App, and when activated it will track motion on all 4 corners of your house/walkways. The Ring notification will tell you when one motion sensor trips, and with successive motion detections you can visualize what way someone is sneaking around your property, all the time the Ring lights are linked so trip one and they all light up bright. It is neat to see them all light up in succession to light the path to your door if that is the way you want them configured. Or they can be linked to Ring wall-mounted PoE Cameras or Battery Ring spotlights to activate in tandem with the path lights to protect your property even better. Despite them staying on at low illumination on a nightly schedule that you set, and only illuminating brightly when motion is detected (staying bright for a minute), they appear to conserve energy from the Duracell Pro D Cells that I used. You can also turn all the Ring lights on at a touch of a button on the Ring App to ward off animals or prowlers. Cons: 4 D Cell batteries are needed (no solar option), but I have only had them for a few weeks so longevity cannot be assessed yet. Don't skimp on the D Cells, go with a brand name for a few cents more per battery (buy in bulk, like 24 per pack), they perform better. and you can load up 6 Ring pathway lights in one install. They can be a tad too tall visually if you have low plantings, so pick the best walkway or corner wall location and don't pick a grass edge that your lawn guy will hit with his tractor or weed-whacker trimmer. (inset it a few inches to keep it from being struck) Ring is Great, expand your system over time, simple to add devices...
Review: One Leaky Pathlight! Update to Update. - Update 9 Jan 2021 - Still working! Ring pathlights still operating on batteries from July 2019. May need replacing in a couple of months. Working great. These do link with Ring doorbell to record motion. No complaints. Installed 5 steplights. Have had to replace one that quit working. Have replaced batteries in three once. Steplights work as intended and provide motion alerts. Overall very pleased with Ring products! ----------------------------------------------- Update 25 Oct 19 - Updating from 3 to 5 stars!! Contacted desertcart who provided a return receipt and refunded a pro-rated cost of light since it was a "deal". But then we received an email from Daniel - desertcart Executive Community Support who specializes in Ring devices. Daniel had read my review and wanted to discuss our issue with the pathlight. He wanted us to return the light to him but unfortunately we had already dropped it off at UPS. These lights are weather resistant so water should not have gotten inside battery compartment. We were provide a replacement. Fantastic customer service from desertcart/Ring! Now to review the lights - we use these lights with our Ring doorbell. Dusk to Dawn is turned off. We have them set to come on after dark if/when motion is detected. A couple are linked to doorbell to record all motion. Brightness is set at 4. Battery level is still full. These lights are wonderful!! (Just added 3 Ring Steplights! May order more if they hold up as well as pathlights.) ------------------------ Purchased 15 July 19. 4 pathlights and bridge. Working beautifully until yesterday when one of the lights quit working. We discovered water inside the battery compartment resulting in corrosion of all 4 D cell batteries. There is also condensation in the glass surrounding lightbulb and condensation in the motion sensor. We brought it inside to dry but the condensation isn't drying up. We checked the other 3 path lights and they were completely dry. I contacted Ring to discuss replacement but the customer service representative said I needed to contact desertcart first (but seemed willing to replace based on desertcart response). Waiting to see what desertcart has to say. Will update if/when I have an answer.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: These seem like they are easy to get stolen. Does Ring replace them if stolen like for the doorbells?**
A: I don't know why there are such negative responses to this valid question. When Ring released their doorbell, one of their famous guarantees was that they would replace it if it was stolen. Now that Ring has expanded to other devices that are even easier to have stolen (like these lights), it makes sense to ask whether their guarantee covers all of their devices or just certain ones. Geez people.

**Q: Is the only way to power these are they D batteries? I would prefer low voltage wiring option if available.**
A: Seems strange they didn’t launch with a “cartridge” the size of 4D cell batteries with 12V (AC/DC) > 6V mini power supply integrated with a few fly leads coming out of it to immediately retrofit into existing low voltage landscape lighting setups.
No way do I want to maintain disposable batteries in the yard lighting.
Also integrate a rechargeable battery in that adapter cartridge so there is always power available during the day for the motion detectors, then charges up at night when the landscape lighting comes in.
At night after the landscape lighting goes off , the motion detector would run off the rechargeable batteries and if lights needed to come on , it would just instruct the main 12v landscape circuit to come ON.
Without that programming logic built into the unit , even if I make a tried to make a power adapter cartridge for this , it wouldn’t be any good without the battery and smart power control logic......

**Q: Can you setup a schedule to turn on the lights at a certain time and disable the motion sensors?**
A: The lights by default are dimmed if enabling dawn to dusk, but that can be disabled. Other than dawn to dusk, there is no apparent scheduling. Note that keeping the lights for longer durations than during motion events will eat into your battery life VERY quickly. Estimates for one year battery life are based on about 8-10 lights-on events per evening over one year. Duration of each lights-on event is listed as 20 seconds, but the shortest event duration setting I found in the app is for 30 seconds after motion is detected. Can be longer, but doing so again cuts into the battery life.

**Q: Batteries included?**
A: Batteries are not included. I recommend using rechargeable batteries because during winter (increased dark hours and increased cold) the batteries only last a couple months. I have 8 of these lights and I keep two extra sets of batteries charged up and ready. Overall I love the lights and how much control i have over them--these are actually "smart" lights with a lot of user control. But you pay a premium for the light and batteries.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Extra lighting for my Floodlight Camera, response is not immediate, somewhat poor Wi-Fi range
*by J***E on May 22, 2019*

The new Ring smart lighting line is a great compliment to my Ring Floodlight Cameras. In particular, I wanted to light up more of the front of the house when my driveway's floodlight camera detected motion. I purchased four of the new Ring pathlights and a hub. Now, when the driveway light detects motion, it turns on the pathlights. The setup process went smoothly. You plug the hub in and scan a barcode and the app walks you through setup. Then, you do the same with these pathlights... insert batteries into each and scan a barcode from each box. At the end, you can set up groups of lights with different names. Then you can use the app to decide what other devices can turn these lights on. For example, I set my driveway floodlight camera to light up these four pathlights, lighting the walkway to the front door. You can have the lights then turn off 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes, or 5 minutes. You can also set a timeframe that lights can be triggered between each day, and more advanced schedules during the week. Response time is not immediate. When my floodlight camera detects motion and turns on its lights, it takes 3-5 seconds for these pathway lights to turn on. I have a very strong Wi-Fi signal in the house and I have the Ring hub close to the front of the house where the lights are. The Ring smart hub, required for any of the new smart lighting products, does not have a very good Wi-Fi radio on it and I found that it struggled to get a good signal despite my strong signal throughout the house to all other devices. Perhaps that is the reason for the delay? There is a "dusk to dawn" feature that will keep your pathlights dimly lit all night and then brighten up when motion is detected. You can turn this off so the lights do not stay dimly lit all night and just turn on during motion to save batteries. The color temperature of these lights is much closer to white than I was hoping for. I wanted more of a soft white to match my other outdoor lights. But since these lights don't stay on for very long, it's okay. They are not "daylight" bright or have any blue in it, but they are not quite soft white either. I'm not sure how well or for how long these will stand up to the elements. I will report back if I see any signs of deterioration or moisture inside. I do wish they were made of metal instead of plastic though. Ring recommends against using rechargeable batteries: "Ring recommends using standard alkaline batteries in Pathlights. Rechargeable batteries will work in Ring Pathlights, though they may not last as long as alkaline batteries. Heavy duty batteries should not be used in Ring Pathlights. Lithium batteries will also work in Ring Pathlights and are recommended when the weather is extremely cold." Five stars for now because they do exactly what I wanted them to - light up more of the front of my home when motion is detected. If I have any issues in the future, I will update.
