Mine is shorter. You can find a replacement ornament for as little as $9.95 on Amazon, but I decided that I preferred not to spend additional dollars for something I already had, i.e., the ornament. In fairness, the spec on the unit says it is 1.5" thick if you page down and read carefully. The unit does not come with any instructions, but the most important steps are to (1) remove the solar cell protective plastic and (2) push the "on" button before mounting. (I checked it in a dark room to make sure it was not already on). Unit appears well made and solid overall.
