I have a lot of Makita power tools including a circular saw, jig saw and router but have never used a rail like this and have tried to make do. I've thought of all sorts of cheaper alternatives - use a spirit level (but clamping it can bend it), use laminate flooring (but that's the same cost and is brittle), buy cheaper (but then have a potentially inferior product and a nightmare on getting adaptors etc.). In the end, I bought one, and some clamps...separately. I'm so glad I did. The rail is strong, weighty, but not heavy and VERY good quality - exactly what I expect from Makita. It's way better than I thought it would be and is an investment that will last me a lifetime. A few things on the design, the clamps DO run along the underside meaning you can clamp very close together. the rails on the underside are strong and look like they will stand up to abuse. The bottom has three separate rubber runners that help hold the rail in place. These are softer to prevent marking wood or countertops etc and even if they wear out, you can buy replacements. The top rail is deep for your adaptors and gives confidence the adaptor (and therefore your power tool) won't jump out during use. There are also holes either end that I've used as hook holes for hanging the rail on the wall when not in use. These do fit together if you want to extend the length and they are such good value on desertcart I'm thinking of getting another straight away....you do need the connector kit although non OEM products are also available on desertcart and are a lot cheaper - If I do buy them, I will review in due course. So....I wasted a lot of time trying to think of ways of replicating one of these more cheaply....I wish I had just gone and bought one earlier. Top product.
