Good steam output but doesn't glide smoothly.

I am a working professional who wears button down shirts and slacks for work every day. When I got married my wife made it clear that ironing was not a part of the deal. This was OK with me because I ironed shirts enough that it has become a part of my morning ritual. No, I don't actually like to iron, but with the right equipment it isn't too much of a hassle.I got this iron to replace a

that had fallen and broken. We had the B&D for three years and had absolutely no problems with it until gravity took over and ruined everything. When it came to finding a replacement I narrowed my options to the Panasonic U-Shape and purchasing the exact same B&D, but opted to go with the Panasonic for a change of pace. In the end, I think I should have stuck with the tried and true B&D option. Some positives to the Panasonic are that it heats up very quickly and produces quite a bit of steam. It does an OK job of ironing shirts and pants, and the sharp point on its front allows the iron to perform good detail work.A significant negative is that the Panasonic doesn't glide well over cotton dress shirts and borders on feeling a little sticky. The Panasonic has what appears to be a nicer, solid coated finish to the bottom than the B&D it replaced which had a wrapped stainless steel bottom and I expected the high-tech Panasonic coating to out-perform steel. I was wrong. While the Panasonic irons well, if I were making the decision over again I would buy another B&D as a replacement. In fact, if I get too fed up with having an iron that makes a mundane chore less pleasant than it already is I might just have to pony up for a second iron that works just a little bit better. While I do think that the Panasonic provides value for the price, I also believe that there are other options at or near the same price-point that will perform better.

    Nice iron

So far, have used it about 5 times and I can say I do like how it stands up on the ironing board. Looks real sturdy and does the job. Ill report back after a good amount of usage.10/15/2013 - Ok, here is an update.Within weeks, the cord that you pull out of the iron would not retract all the way. So, the cord would dangle about 12 inches and not go back in. Personally, I could care less since every iron I purchased always had the cord NOT retract. As I used it more and more, the reverse would happen. I would pull out the power cord and it would not lock into place. It would just retract all the way back into the iron. I had to use a file clip to block the cord from going back into the iron. The Iron itself I really like. It really does the job, is easy to see the water level and easy to fill. I dont get the dripping like other irons. Its also very sturdy and does not topple over easy.I buy many things thru Amazon and this was the first time I had a complaint about a product. I sent an email to customer support on a SUNDAY (where most stores are closed) telling them of my situation and figured they would not be able to help me since I did purchase the Iron months ago.Within an hour or less, I received an email from Amazon customer service telling me they already setup a new shipment to go out at no cost to me. In addition, they sent me a link to print a free shipping label to return the broken iron.I am 52 years old. I am not a new kid on the block and I purchase from all over the place. There is nobody that I know that has great customer service like Amazon. To me, I would rather pay more money on a product from Amazon just because of customer service like that. And I never had to leave my house. If my replacement iron does the same thing, ill post back.

    Not im'pressed'

I needed a new iron and did what I always do when I need new stuff, I came to amazon for reviews. Finally selected this iron based on reviews but I am fairly disappointed. I just tried it out for the first time. First of all, (and I knew this as it's apparent from the picture) I don't like the placement of the temperature control dial. However, this seems to be the new style and all of the irons I considered buying based on reviews had this style of dial. It's awkward to use. I don't like it. Secondly, based on several reviews I expected this iron to glide smoothly over fabric. It's not that glidey. It's not even as glidey as my last, much cheaper iron. It's just an average degree of glidey, at most. Thirdly, the retractable cord, which was one of the features I thought I'd like, is kind of a pain. The cord itself is rather short. I can just barely make it work in my ironing spot. But when I went to retract the cord, it was a bit of an ordeal because the manual tells you to 'hold on to the plug' as you push the cord retracter button. But the cord moves VERY swiftly and holding on to the plug while simultaneously pushing the button was unintuitive. Meaning, I released the button (yes, I can walk and chew gum at the same time.) Apparently, if the cord is not fully retracted you have to pull at least some of it out again before you continue retracting. Eventually I got it. My troubles may simply be due to being a newb and the next time I use it may be a breeze, but that, coupled with the overall averageness to below averageness of the iron has left me disappointed. (Also, the price went down before it was even delivered - but that has nothing to do with my review.) I will come back and add new comments and possibly change my star rating after I have used it some more.Edited 10/02/14 to add: This thing drips water like crazy. I got the hang of the cord retraction, but the iron is so drippy and makes everything so wet when in steam mode, I find it's even worse than I originally thought. Maybe I just got a difficult one.
