She will run herself to death and over heats extremely easy. I tried 2 or 3 other cooling vest/shirts. I was actually surprised that this one fit her the best. I was skeptical that she wouldn’t like the adjustable string near her stomach, however she doesn’t seem to mind it and it’s really what helps make the fit great. It is not as easy to get on as the others; super easy to get off. It is definitely on the thicker side so if you’re looking for more of a “shirt” style, this isn’t that. We’ve only used it a couple times so far and seems to help her stay cool and play longer. I have a small black dog and we live in New Mexico. It is dry and hot here. My dog was really struggling in the direct sun, even at 70 degrees. The sun hits his back and he starts to itch and will just sit down and not move. I read the review by the veterinarian (find it and read it) and that sold me. This vest is a bit more expensive, but it also has three layers of fabric rather than 1 or 2 in some of the others. The light color reflects that sun. With the three layers, it stays damp longer and in the dry climate, I definitely needed that. My dog has been able to walk for an hour without losing the cooling factor. It works too. He does not slow down while we are walking and so far it has tested out at 85 degrees with no problem. I use boots or mushers secret on his feet to protect from heat on the street. It is worth the extra money for the extra thickness. I know that when I was thinking about a cooling vest, it seemed counter intuitive to put layers on top of my dog's hair, but the evaporative cooling process really works. It doesn't stay dry for long and it isn't super absorbent, but we have found the best way to do it is either squish it in a stream or a bag. Usually we carry a bag to put a little water in and massage it around. You can recharge it without taking it off but it is much more effective in the bag and uses a lot less water, which is important if there aren't a ton of streams.
