Probably these are speakers that function at 4 ohms impedance to get a decent sound. As long as you use speakers with the same impedance, you could try different speakers. Look on the back of the speaker cabinet. A good speaker will list the impedance as 4, 8, or sometimes 16 ohms (the little upside-down "U" symbol). The lower the ohms (resistance-impedance) the less power it takes to drive the speakers. If the resistance is too high, you have to turn the power (volume) up to compensate, and in low-price systems like this one, the amplifier does not have much power, and if you crank it all they way up you will get distortion. But you can find many decent 4-ohm speakers on amazon, ebay -- even thrift stores. **Q: is the turntable fully automatic which means the arm returns to its starting position when the record has finished?** A: No the turntable is not fully automatic. You must sit the arm on the record and at that time the record begins to turn. It will not return the arm to its starting position. HOWEVER, it does cut off when the record is finished and the arm has moved to the center. I am using in in my study and the sound is very, very good. Just hooked it up ( plug and play speakers ), turned it on and viola! everything works....This is perfect for my needs. The only drawback I have noticed is the needle arm for the turntable feels a tad light so I put a penny on top ( yes, this is an old-fashioned fix for records that skip or get stuck ) and it made a world of difference. The FM antenna picks up more clear stations than my Philips system did, which was quite nice until I jammed the cd player :-( hence, I ordered this as a replacement and I am very pleased. Nice little system, good sound, easy setup .
