I got the student starter kit around March and got this one to replace the wax I went through around August. So one can lasted me around 5 months, which is great. I use it for my legs and upper lip area and this wax works great on both. I really like the quality of this wax. I find it very easy to apply and I almost never have to go through the same area more than twice. With that being said, I've not used razors/creams etc. more than a few times in my entire life. Since I had a great experience with this wax I thought sharing what I do could be helpful to some people/beginners out there. Consistency: The consistency is key. It should be like honey (I actually like it just a tiny bit thicker). Too thick = you'll get a bruise, too thin = you'll burn. I use the Gigi warmer that came with the student kit. When the can is full or 2/3 full, I warm it on high for 15 minutes. If it's half or less than half full, I heat it less (around 10 minutes). Which melts half of the wax and there is an unmelted lump of wax in the middle. The reason I do this is the top center always melts the latest and by then, the rest is too runny for my taste. Waiting everything to melt and turning the warmer off and waiting for a couple of minutes could also work, but I just don't have the patience. Depending on how long it takes you to wax, you might have to turn the warmer on/off a few times to keep the consistency. Exfoliate & Clean: Having your skin clean and dry is important. Lotions, water, sweat & oil etc prevents you from applying the wax evenly and even if you manage to apply, it doesn't really stick to your hair so it doesn't work. I also found that exfoliation beforehand helps a lot. It takes off the dead skin & exposes the hair better. Length of the hair: If you are a shaver, your hair gets thicker, so it becomes more noticeable. To get results from waxing, you might have to let go for a while (week / 2 weeks depending on how fast your hair grows) and try to live with it, so it gets long enough for the wax to actually pick it up. I had to shave a couple of times and in my case, my hair grows very slow so I had to wait 2 weeks after shaving. I generally wax every 3 - 4 weeks, because the hair in my legs are very thin and they aren't noticeable before week 5. Set-up: I've read a lot of reviews about wax being messy, and it is. With every soft wax that will be the case. What I do is to put a few paper towels/old newspapers between where I pick up the wax with the spatula/applicator and where I apply it, because sometimes accidents happen and it really is a hard task to remove it from surfaces. And I recommend using a collar with this wax. Test: The first thing I do with every new brand or type of wax is to test it in a small area. If you have sensitive skin or allergies I would definitely recommend doing this before anything else. A little bit of redness is normal, but stay away if it makes your skin itch, swell, bruise. Pull your skin tight: In areas where your skin is soft and the surface isn't tight & flat (in my case soft and wobbly inner tighs), you have to pull the skin up and tighten the area before you pull the strips. Otherwise you might pull your skin with the strip, which is crazy painful and you'll definitely get a bruise. Trying to pull the strip slowly can also cause you to get a bruise. soft wax is what this is, its hot wax. hard wax dries to a resin like finish and doesnt require strips, and azulene wax is film "hard" wax that looks a lot like fruit roll up, its very popular bc it also doesnt require strips, but it is not my preference as soft wax gets everything and wont tear bc you use soft muslin or cotton strips. no wax is created equal, and someone saying that "soft wax" will tear your skin off, is a common misconception and issue for a lot of people who arent properly experienced enough in the world of waxing. that was my job and i spent 3 years as an apprentice waxer which i now am very thankful for, bc it saves me a lot of money! a lot of women who lived through the 80's and 90's will try to urge you differently bc they are stuck in their ways with being the "hard wax gen." but professionally speaking, depending on the quality, what oils are in the formula, and most importantly, the temperature used to apply the wax all matter greatly, and differ immensely in your experience with it. lower quality soft "hot" waxes can sometimes pull a bit of skin with the strip bc they are not mixed with the proper oils or applied at the proper temperature. you dont just heat it up, and apply it! you have to know what the "golden" temperature is, like honey so to speak, never thin and drippy or you will burn your skin and then you will pull it off. this gigi honee formula does not, as long as you do not apply it too hot. the oils mixed with the wax are what give you that protective barrier between your skin, and the wax. hard wax is a lot more painful in my personal experience with myself, and others no matter how you handle it usually. and i do NOT suggest it in the bikini, underarm, or any other sensitive areas! that is what soft wax is for. everyone has their preference depending on their age, and what they grew up using. women from before the 90's are really big on hard wax. whereas i was instructed on how to use hot wax, and azulene wax in the early and mid 2000's due to its popularity. ive personally with my super sensitive skin, have never been able to stomach using hard wax, i have horror stories and scars!, and if your skin is too sensitive, sometimes you arent able to pull it off of yourself so that could be a big predicament, if thats the case for your specific body. hard wax is mostly used for face now, and on my clinic floor it was restricted from ever being used anywhere else just bc of this issue. with hot wax your skin will be perfectly fine as long as you do not apply it too hot to where it damages your skin and sinks too far down into your pours, i would suggest consulting a professional before using it yourself, and maybe getting it done one or two times by a professional just to watch how a trained tech does it first. and just so you have the proper safety precautions and knowledge in mind. also, we're not doctors. we dont take some oath at boards to keep information proprietary, and its not some big secret to explain to you over the phone how to keep from burning yourself!
