So far the only thing I really hear is a soft humming/running noise. It's not too loud though that it's annoying or anything like that. I've accidentally left it on when I went to sleep and woke up sweating so it definitely heats up well. You have the option of using heat without flames, adjusting the heat between 750 * 1500 watts or just having the flames with no heat. What I don't like is when you turn the flames on, while it's pretty, there's extra light and glow that come through the bottom so it sort of lights up the wall like beams coming from the unit.
