If you don't it's not as accurate, at least that's what we found to be true.#2- Press down firmly on it when you are tracing the shape that it made, otherwise the little pieces will move on you. The only thing that would make this a better item is if it was longer because like with the floor they're 8 Inches wide, so it would have been helpful if this was at least that long but it still worked really well! It molds around odd shapes when you need to cut flooring around a door or wall. It is so dang easy to use. When I think of the endless hours I spent trying to use a paper pattern, oh brother.
