One of the things that impresses me the most about Max's writing is, despite these being for kids, Max doesn't shy away from exploring the more mature and heavier aspects of kids living through a monster-zombie apocalypse. The characters react the way 13 year olds would to losing their families, friends and neighbors while literally fighting for mere survival - they cope the best they can with video games, junk food and daredevil stunts but they also clearly are dealing with serious emotional and mental traumas that manifest believably for each character. He finished it in 3 hours. For a kid that hates, and I mean absolutely despises reading, he loves these books! He has read them all at least 2-3 times.
