I put the straps at the widest point. That will make it 22 inches. I also used the same product and didn't used the hooks provided to hold a a ladder. This makes it 12 inches from the top of the ceiling to the ladder. I was going to use kayaks in this area, but it was to close to the garage door. Double check. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ RAD Sportz Kayak Storage Hoist *by J***N on March 5, 2026* I chose the RAD Sportz Kayak Storage Hoist because it's rated to 125 lbs. It is currently holding a 12' fishing kayak with paddle, life-preserver, and some carry wheels. Estimating it near 85-90 lbs in total. It feels pretty sturdy. The brake holds pretty well, and it didn't make any strange sounds while the kayak was being lifted and lowered over and over. Four stars cause so far it does what it says it well, but: it hangs low even on the tightest strap loops, the instructions are good enough (but need improvement), and, more importantly, the screws for the wall hook sheared immediately... in pre-drilled holes! They were absolutely useless, and I needed to provide my own (I went with cabinet screws I had on hand, not countersunk). Other than that, it was a pretty simple setup. I would say it took me maybe 1.5 hours, and I'm an idiot. Rope installation was a bit counter intuitive. Labeling things in the instructions "rope 1" and "rope 2" could easily lead to people cutting the rope unnecessarily. YOU DON'T NEED TO CUT THE ROPE INTO THREE SEPARATE STRANDS.
