In water purification, it causes impurities to coagulate which are removed as the particulate settles to the bottom of the container or more easily filtered. When dissolved in a large amount of neutral or slightly alkaline water, aluminium sulfate produces a gelatinous precipitate of aluminium hydroxide, Al(OH)3. In dyeing and printing cloth, the gelatinous precipitate helps the dye to adhere to the clothing fibres by rendering the pigment insoluble. Thought it might of came with instructions** A: I used this method to prepare cotton fabric for marbling ; Prepare Your Fabric (The Day Before) Mix 2 tablespoons of alum into two gallons of water. (The ratio of alum to water is 1:1.) Place all the fabric you're planning on marbling in the solution for 20 minutes. (Don't leave it any longer or it can ruin the fabric.) After 20 minutes remove the fabric from the water. I did all this outside, in case of strong odours, and hung the fabric to dry on the outside line.
