"Researchers have found that one specific mechanism of near-infrared and red light therapy is that these wavelengths of light are able to penetrate into cells and activate the mitochondria, directly leading to increased cellular energy production..." Fascinating stuff, to say the least. RLT is heavily researched and there is a lot of good information out there for those willing to put in a little work.This Therapy Bulb is rated at 36w. There are more powerful bulbs on Amazon--in addition to this one I have 48 and 52 watt bulbs. Power is very important in RLT; too weak of a light source cannot penetrate deeply enough to do any good, no matter how long you leave it in place. The more powerful bulbs I mentioned need to be used around 6-12" from the skin; this one can actually be placed directly on the body for brief periods, and that is quite useful in treating isolated areas. I use it in body contact with specific problem areas while watching TV or other mindless activity--the light from this bulb can penetrate through the hand, so you know it is working. To get further benefits out of it one would need two or more of them--a combination of more and less powerful bulbs is ideal-- and mount them on stands or other extension devices and then direct the light onto larger areas of the body. This is a very inexpensive way to build and use your own RLT system. You do need some guidance on RLT use, and the above mentioned book is the best place to start. And don't overdo it--shorter sessions are best. Too much RLT is the equivalent of sunburn, and the results can become negative quickly.This is a well built bulb, comes with a power cable and, again, is of the power class that enables it to be used hand held. Start with this one and then think about building a system including the more powerful bulbs. Arrived in excellent condition. Does not generate too much heat, just a gentle warming. I wondered about the light that look like they are not on, but I read the instructions and asked a friend who also uses red light therapy and I was told the bulbs are on, but we cannot see the light emitted. So far, this is working fine. I am using it for my lower back and trying neck exposure for hypothyroid.
