### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An engaging and colorful introduction to China
*by M***. on April 11, 2008*

Author Debbi Michiko Florence invites young readers to explore China, "a country of contrasts and extremes and one with a lot of 'firsts.'" Along the way, she sheds fascinating light on the jaw-dropping landscape (e.g., Mount Everest, the Gobi Desert, the Yangtze River), the "daily life" of children in China, inventions that paved the way for the modern world (e.g., paper and printing), China's rich culture and history, cuisine, and more.CHINA not only shows young readers how to say "tea" in Mandarin, it provides a step-by-step guide to having a "Tea Tasting" of their very own. Readers can also make a compass, practice the art of Chinese calligraphy, sculpt a jade figure, and learn how to "integrate feng shui to create harmony" in their life (there are "over 40 activities" to try!).*Note*: In my original review, I neglected to mention the delightfully whimsical artwork by Jim Caputo that brings the activities and China's multi-layered culture to life in a way that readers of all ages will find accessible. This book is a relevant and entertaining addition to any classroom or home library. - H. Balgassi

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very stretchable book - use it for lots of fun
*by T***D on July 3, 2012*

Our favorite nonfiction title about China. Packed full of information that isn't the typical facts given about China and Chinese culture, language help, facts and discussion questions, and (our favorite) activity ideas including crafts and games to extend the use of the book. I'm particularly fond of the town meeting activity on the page talking about Three Gorges Dam and the differing opinions about its construction. Super educational, well made and laid out, this would be a great reference for homeschool (or not) for a unit on China. I'm thinking I can really get some things out of here for future classroom visits if my daughter wants to take the opportunity to present to kids about her home country. If nothing else, it will become a go-to reference for you when the kids (or you) are bored. Can't go wrong with this one.If you want to read my reviews of 35 different books having to do with China for kids, go to my 7.2.2012 post on myoverthinking(dot)com

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Gift to Help Chinese Children Explore and Celebrate Their Heritage
*by E***E on July 23, 2008*

I bought this book to give as birthday presents for my goddaughter and a friend from her adoption group. Both girls were born in Hunan, China and I always like to get them presents that help them learn about and feel proud of their Chinese heritage. The book is full of interesting information and activities that I know they will enjoy. One caveat for anyone buying this as a gift for an adopted child -- there is a brief mention of China's one child policy, so you may want to discuss this with her parents to be sure they are prepared -- or choose -- to discuss this issue with their child!
