Rock.The main reason, of course, were the stories - drawn by thebrilliant Joe Kubert from the scripts of Robert Kanigher.These were truly different tales of heroism and daringin battle. The amazing thing is that as the years passedKubert and Kanigher continued to ratchet up the quality, providingmore unique, different, even oddball stories.SGT. ROCK ARCHIVES (Volume 4) features stories fromOAAW 126-137 (with their wonderful covers, soon to becomescrapbook special), plus a surprise SHOWCASE 45 battle epic.Each story is exciting (but the truly classic ones loomin the future). We have Rock and his "combat happy Joes ofEasy Company" battling tanks, fighter planes and fanaticalNaziis in every kind of locale and weather.Who can resist our hero going into battle toting a toddler inhis backpack ("Young Soldiers Never Cry" - OAAW 132),wherein a hygenically studious Rock squirts milk from a cow into his canteen?There's also "The End of Easy Company" (it was always "ending")and the cleverly told "The Four Faces of Rock" - OAAW 127.Glorious color, impossible action: this was long beforethe anti-war sentiments of the sixties crept into the strip.And as good as these stories are, the next Rock Archive willfeature "The Fighting Guns of Easy" (a tale narrated by theactual weapons of Easy).
