Review: This Is the Best SATA Hard Drive That I Have Ever Owned - I ordered a Western Digital 8TB Ultrastar DC HC320 8TB hard drive which my computer detects as a Hitachi HUS728T8TALE6L4 8TB hard drive. After buying one of these drives, I was so impressed with it that I ordered two more. I've been using these drives as storage drives with a Samsung SSD boot drive for several months now in three different computers and they have worked flawlessly. I've always used Hitachi Ultra Star drives for their reliability and performance. This WD drive is a really Hitachi Ultrastar drive that now has a WD label since WD bought Hitachi's drive business. Besides being ultra reliable with a MTBF of 2 million hours, this 7200 RPM drive is also the fastest SATA drive that I have ever tested that wasn't a SSD. I had been using a Hitachi HUS724040ALE640 4TB hard drive for storage and when running the CrystalDiskMark test for Seq Q32T1 test, I got 155 MB/s Read and 147 MB/s write which I thought was pretty respectable. But the Western Digital 8TB Ultrastar DC HC320 blows those scores away giving scores of 263 MB/s Read and 263 MB/s Write for the Seq Q32T1 test. Just for reference my Samsung 850 EVO scored 547 MB/s Read and 512 MB/s Write on the Seq Q32T1 test. This drive has it all speed, reliability, runs cool, and is reasonably priced. I've seen a lot of negative reviews complaining about this drive not having a warranty from WD which is true. However I do feel more confident that the seller that I bought mine from, Platinum Micro, will honor their-5 year warranty after calling them on the phone. I had paid $212.87 for the last drive that I bought from them and two days later Platinum Micro dropped the price on desertcart to $187.50. After doing a search for Platinum Mirco, Inc., I was able to find that they were located in the Los Angeles area and I got their phone number. When I called the number, I got a menu and one of the options was for warranty returns. I selected sales and talked to the salesman there who was very polite and explained I was a little upset that I hadn't even received the drive I ordered yet and the price was now now $25.31 cheaper that when I ordered it. He said no problem that they would refund $25.31 back to my credit card; so I would rate their customer service as excellent. If you want to get really picky, the only thing you might complain about is that it is a slightly noisier that a WD Black drive but it's only slightly louder and I don't think most people will mind. It is so fast I can now transfer files from my SSD to this drive in about half the time it took before using my old 4TB Ultra Star drive. Just buy this drive you won't regret it.
Review: Works great in a silver tower Mac Pro. 60 second installation time. - Flawless and quiet performance. It does come formatted for windows, however when I powered up my Mac Pro this was instantly recognized and in about 30 seconds the Mac reformatted the drive for the more efficient HFS+ (macOS). The performance is outstanding. The packaging for these drives is top-notch. The WD units are cushioned with end-brackets and each drive also arrives in it's own box. The drives are hermetically sealed and labelled individually, on the drive and on the Mylar vacuum bag. As for performance, their great! They are similar to WD Black for speed and performance. Actually like these over the black series. Just as fast but much more quiet and built sturdier. Something to consider regarding warranties from ANY hard drive manufacturer. Do you really want to use the warranty? Let's say the drive fails, do you really want to send all of your data off to someone else? In my many years with WD I've never had one fail so this issue is one I've never had to confront. I find this drive to be a good value if you need something reliable. However Bear in mind that I purchased my very first hard drive in about 1984, 5MB (5 megabytes) for $1700, so all drives seem inexpensive compared to the early days. ## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is the ultrstar 8tb drive warrantied by western digital and for how long?**
A: Yes and no. Technically they have a five year warranty, but the drive you receive from a marketplace seller may be OEM or gray market, and not eligible for WD warranty, only reseller warranty.

**Q: Does the 14tb drive have the power disable feature?**
A: This is advertised as the WUH721414ALE6L4 which does NOT have the power disable. *HOWEVER* I ordered 6 of these and they are all the 604 meaning they DO have power disable. I had to cut a wire on my power connectors (closest to the L shape) to use these drives.

**NOT AS ADVERTISED**

**Q: Can wd ultrastar be used in thinkstation. i heard hgst enterprise drive is incompatible for home desktop, and need to fix the 3.3v pin problem**
A: 3.3v pin problem can be fixed by using a Molex-to-SATA power adapter, here: https://smile.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-3-Pack-Molex-Power/dp/B00STNUB04/ref=sr_1_3?crid=345P4SZAA2LNW&keywords=molex+to+sata&qid=1562983596&s=gateway&sprefix=molex+t%2Caps%2C150&sr=8-3 But not all Ultrastar have that feature. Look at the model number. If the next-to-last character is L, you're fine without an adapter; if it's 0, you'll need one. However, just because you can make the drive work in a desktop doesn't make it the best choice for that application. These are datacenter devices, optimized for datacenter operation, and somewhat noisier than desktop drives.

If you do still want this particular drive, I wouldn't buy it from Amazon. All the buying options are through marketplace sellers, and you're likely to get an OEM or gray-market drive with no guarantee of a specific model number and no WD warranty (you have to contact the reseller if you have a warranty issue). B&H sells the same drive in sealed retail packaging at competitive prices (slightly lower at the time of this writing).

**Q: pmr ? does it use it ??**
A: What is pmr and what are you referring to uses it?

### ⭐ Trustworthiness on the line?
*by N***N on February 11, 2025*

Deceptive selling of refurbished for a declared new product. This really got me good both times. Learn from my lessons and a few others that gone before you. Purchased a drive on January 5, 2025. I installed in, within two days, the drive hummed like a 747 taking off when it's on. I dismissed it as, "Oh, it's just the nature of the beast." In a total of 5 days, the drive started to click. Alarm sounds went off in my head. I installed the WD DashBoard and pulled up CrystalDiskInfo. WD Dashboard returned "Failed with Error Code: 7". It was on its way out. I checked the operational hours, the HDD already had 25,266 hours logged on it. I gave the seller the benefits of the doubt and requested a replacement. New drive came in, placed the drive into system, first thing first, ran the CrystalDiskInfo, and 38,944 hours was already logged. This is from the "Buy New" option from the seller. This is not "Recondition" or "Refurbished". This is straight up "Buy New" option. While the replacement drive under operation, I can hear intermittent high-pitch humming sound. None of my other drives are doing it. Not even my NVR drives that have been running for the past 7 years. These older drives were brand spanking new at very premium prices. Surely enough, upon contacting WD like everyone else, since it's an OEM drive, there is no warranty of any kind. The only warranty you have is data recovery as you purchase it along with the drive. Other than that, there's absolutely no other warranty. I know drives like these can last a long time, or it can crap out in a couple of weeks. If you are up in a Russian Roulette gamble with your precious data, go for it. I'll be using this drive as temporary storage rather relying on it as part of the RAID or standalone for long-term data storage. I'll trust it as far as I can sneeze at it.
