Real cotton and in a ripstop weave for durability. It is indeed double layer material on the top and sides of the hat. This makes it an ideal candidate to take a waterproof fabric spray. Even without a fabric spray it kept my head dry in the rain. In the summer it will be fairly cool to wear and keep the sun/ heat off my head. It is indeed on the small side. But my head is on the smaller side for a man. So the hat fits me fine. If your head is on the larger size the hat will be too small. Who remembers Indiana Jones? Well this is kind of hat he would wear. Swashbuckling his way around the desert, defeating ne'er-do-wells, liberating holy relics and maidens in distress (or that dress). This is a great hat for the adventurer, buccaneer or desperado.
