Ceramic rings are light weight (sign of good quality). Active carbons are also in shape as shown in the description. you have to wash the active carbons under the running water before putting it inside the filter. That will ensure no cloudy water. Both ceramic rings and active carbons came neatly packed in their respective media bags. Bio balls are some what small shaped. (0.5 inch dia) and that is exactly what I needed. I've kept them in a separate partition inside my top filter which allows them to float and rotate in the water flow.
