Yes, the shape works well, especially the pointed end for getting around your eyes, and these sponges in particular (I haven't tried THE sponge, not being willing to spend $20 for a sponge) are soft, smooth, and dense. I use them to apply a thick cream foundation, and maybe that's why I find them a bit of a pain to wash. I imagine liquid foundation would have to wash out more easily. If you really want egg-shaped sponges but don't want to pay for the Beauty Blender, these aren't a bad compromise. I took away one star because one of the sponges had what seemed like a tiny grain of gravel embedded in it.
