If you want to remove all the nasty stuff out of your drinking water chlorine, amonna, and all the chemical runoff from the rain that brings even more stuff that a water softener doesn't remove. This softener is awesome happy with the buy. I also added 3 carbon 10in block whole home filters I replace every 6 months after the water softener and the water is amazing. I have a 6 stage reverse osmosis in the kitchen running through my fridge. The Di Filter in the reverse osmosis is what makes the ice cubes crystal clear. So to answer your question Yes you do because it does not remove everything out of your water. Just by adding a softener does not make your water safe it just removes most not all hard minerals.
