Mine is 1.5" long with the bale. It is very "hefty" or sturdy but, as some reviewers mentioned, you may decide to permanently seal the lid to the tube, once you have filled it as you choose. The clasp is sturdy enough for my purposes (a paper scroll), so I won't need to do this. I was worried it might be too overpowering as a pendant, but no--and with a long enough chain, it can "sit inside your bra," (if you will) so no one even need know you are wearing it. :) As with other reviewers, I purchased this piece with a very specific personal spiritual intent in mind and using this prayer tube to fill that need just "feels special." I don't know how else to say it. It was the perfect solution for my needs.
