A furnace surge protector is secondary protection. You need both. The furnace has a sensitive circuit board which can, and I have seen, blow out from a surge. These circuit boards can run about $300 from the HVAC tech, if he/she has one in the middle of the winter. Plus the service call charge. **Q: Aloha, I don't understand how this works, The wiring looks like its parallel to the equipment it's protecting. How does it protect it?** A: I placed one at my disconnect box outside by the AC unit.
