Review: Paid for itself in three months - Short version: Both me and my pets were happier thanks to this light during the coldest winter months. PROS: - Great value for the price. The amount of time spent NOT running our heaters (about 800 watts on the low setting) almost certainly resulted in much lower bills. - Bright, warm light color is especially good for those cold, gray, overcast months. - Much easier to manage (and less of a fire hazard) than our space heater. Also less likely to trip the breaker and the exterior of the bulb (outside of the front-facing light) never gets that hot. CONS: - It uses around 70% more electricity than an equivalent LED so definitely swap to a different bulb when you can just put a jacket on. - Take note of the sizing -- the bulb is larger and more unwieldy than I expected -- which is also part of why I broke it about 4 months into using. RECOMMENDATIONS - Ideal in open spaces that are hard to provide heat (basements and garages) or where you need specific heat for short periods. - Put the bulb on some kind of timer or remote on/off switch so that it doesn't run 24/7. You lose much of the value versus other heaters if it's running continuously e.g. a space heater that's only on 10 mins per hour. - Look for a sturdy and strong lamp or housing, ideally something you can point in different directions. Or at least something with a protective guard in front.
Review: crushed box, but still works.. :/ - I was worried when I saw that the light bulb box was crushed, the mail carrier was not careful. :( I test the bulb and it works, whew! I would pack it more secured if I were them. If this light bulb happen to go out on me in less than a month, then I will bet it's because of this, I will be issuing refund. I would instruct mail carrier to be careful and that it's fragile but we all know mail carrier are reckless and not reliable. Anyway, will update review later. :) UPDATE: IT works perfectly fine, and works through-out Guinea keets entire brooding period (6 weeks) It is excellent and so warm. There is couple of times when my wooden lamp stand fell down onto floor crashing, this lamp endures. :) Would buy again.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What wavelength does this bulb emit?**
A: Heat lamps do not output a specific wavelength. They output everything from red at 650nm to 1100nm infrared. If you google incandescent heat lamp then click on images, you will see what the spectrum looks like. Hope that helps.

**Q: Is this a Teflon-coated bulb?**
A: I called the Philips Company and asked specifically about this model bulb.I was informed that the company puts a silicon coating on some of their bulbs and that this bulb specifically has has no coating on it.There is a bulb that does have a coating, and it's number 159327.UPDATE:The bulb that I received appears to have a coating on it. Two reasons why:The coating can be smelled after it has run for a few minutes. When comparing with three other bulbs that do not have a coating on it, there is an mark that appears on the bulb I received that is missing on the other bulbs.comparison photo called philips-amazon-415836-comparison.jpg - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3EYYHNgU811clRneUk0dEZ3OFk/view?usp=sharing The box I received from this product has this information on it820915Ordering Code:250R40/HR 120V 4/1 TPI bought these bulbs from Home Depot, and they also had coating on them. For the use of an infrared sauna, any coating is not optimal. In the case of a bathroom, a coating would likely be optimal.

**Q: Can this be used outside of a bird cage, or will the bars heat up?**
A: You'd want to keep it a foot or two away from the cage, so that it won't burn the birds. It will heat up the bars some, but if you experiment with it and watch it closely, you can figure out how far/close to put it to the cage so your birds are warm but not getting burnt from the bars. It's a good, warm heat lamp for sure.

**Q: Can this be used for NEAR infrared lamp saunas?**
A: I built a near infrared sauna with these bulbs to replace the far IR sauna I had before (I guess these bulbs have both as described in the other comments, but this was what my health practitioner advised, that these red heat lamp bulbs are "the" bulb for near IR). amazon also sells dr larry wilson's book on how to build your own sauna.... it doesn't have to be fancy, I know a woman with limited space who managed to attach these bulbs with sockets from Lowe's to an adjustable mic stand that she carries into her small shower stall so she can detox sauna that way. Best, G.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This lamps saves a 23 year old small parrot with no problem. EZ on electric bill. The same lamp still works after 4 years.
*by Y***L on January 17, 2018*

I bought this originally in 2014 as we had a whole slew of little chicks. Winters pass quickly in the south so I packed it up and put it in storage. I pulled it out in 2018 to warm up / heat our conyure tropical bird that has his cage in the garage. It has worked well. In fairness I should add that the garage never goes below 45 degrees as we have our garage ceiling insulated. ( but not the walls.) I tried a space heater but the heater kept kicking back to OFF. The point is it worked, and I think that this is a lot cheaper way to go than running a 1500w variable capacity space heater. It heats the bird. He directly feels the heat and appears happy. I feel good about running it... 24 hours as it is not a big draw on electric and he can trust it is always on and can move according to his need in the comfort level. BTW This bird is over 23 years old. In bird years... yeah. He is picky...
