Does the locking mechanism become tight when in the lock position or does is easily move around?

Yes. The lock holds securely. It will not allow it to be opened until placed back into the unlock position.

It's just me, but I wouldn't use these for climbing, or real heavy duty activity. Mine are copper /orange
