I've had several foot surgeries and have toe problems so I can't wear just any shoe. I've been buying New Balance for years now because they're the only athletic shoe I can wear comfortably. They're the only ones I can find in wide sizes also. In New Balance, I wear a 10 1/2 wide in women's or size 9 wide in men's.I had the 993's and loved them, in fact still have them but they're wearing out and, of course, New Balance can never keep a good shoe when they have one but always think they have to "improve" it and make a new model. So along comes the 990. Well, it's comfortable.....BUT.....there are a couple things about it I do not like and would not buy it again. Here's why. The tongue on the shoe is too short, period. So when it starts out short, then slips down after a while like most of them do, it becomes slightly annoying. Not really enough to cause any pain but just annoying. Also, and probably the major thing is this shoe runs LARGE. Like I said, I always order 10 1/2 W and normally have plenty of toe room. Well, I could have ordered, at minimum, a HALF size smaller up to a whole size! So, because I had so much extra room, I put in an extra set of inserts along with what came with the shoe and now they are very comfortable! They could use some more cushioning in the first place! They look great. They feel great, now. But the tongue thing bugs me every time I put them on! Why, oh why, does New Balance do this?? They've done this with other styles too, such as the 610 that you can't buy anymore and I have to go into search mode to try to find another pair that feels as good. Unfortunately, it's hit and miss sometimes. But I DO love New Balance shoes and I've had better luck with them than any other brand. The 990 just doesn't compare with the 993. If you buy them, order down 1/2-1 size or plan to put inserts in them and if you don't think the shorter tongue will bother you, give them a try. With Amazon, you can always send them back! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ New Balance made in USA *by J***Z on Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on October 26, 2014* I have worn NB shoes for many years and was first introduced to them by a great orthopedic group. Was told to wear the 700 series or higher for the best support. Now and then would buy something in the 5 or 600 series and never got the same support. Recently ordered a pair in a much higher number and found them to be really a disappointing quality with no support and returned them. Oh yes, did I mention they were made in China. Found numerous blogs citing similar results with those made in China. The difference in price for the China shoes was considerable but for what? My recommendation is to bite the bullet and buy only NB made in USA regardless of price. I ordered the 990V3 and will never again order anything else. This is the greatest shoe I've ever worn and the workmanship is unequaled. NB is the only shoe manufacturer that still makes shoes in America and does so on 70% of their product. See their website for videos and info on choosing shoes based on your foot type and needs. I have severe pronation (super flat feet) and know now to look for NB addressing motion control. You can search Amazon with those parameters. One P.S. I did buy a pair of NB Country Walkers made in Indonesia and they have been excellent but were not rated as Motion Control which really makes a difference for me.l. I couldn't be happier with my beautiful Kelly Green 990's and hope they never stop making them. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Shoes *by W***W on Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on May 14, 2015* A mixed review for one of the better shoes out there. I personally wear men's 990 v.3 and have 3 pairs of them in different colors. I bought my mom a pair of the women's version. She works with people with severe developmental disabilities and is nearing 70 years "young". She generally has a wide foot for a woman. I ordered her regular size in these 990s and they were quite a bit big on her. The sizes in the men's version also tend to be bigger than normal, but not as much as these were on her. She ended up going down a full size (from 8 to 7) and says they are still "roomy". In comparison to the men's, I typically wear a 11.5 (Brooks, Nike) to a 12 (Asics, Adidas), but only wear an 11 in the 990s. Besides this size problem the shoes have become her daily shoe. She stands 5-6 hours a day at work and says they have relieved her knee and ankle pain, not cured, but at least relieved.
