An aluminum or magnesium anode sacrifices itself and protects the steel (iron) tank. Water heater owners' manuals say to check the anode, but who reads manuals these days? This is especially important if you have a water softener, as the sodium in the water is more corrosive than the calcium and magnesium that the water softener removes.This anode is flexible, so one doesn't need 4 feet of space above the water heater in order to replace it.Grab a long breaker bar and a 1 1/16" socket and replace your anode. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Prolongs the life of a hot water heater *by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2020* Correct size and fit, easy to install. It’s impossible to monitor its success unless you serivice the hot water heater by draining the water out of the hot water heater then remove the Anode Rod for inspection. What is the meaning of, instruction quality? No instructions came with this product. Current rating profile is not worded properly. The smart thing to do is replace this on a new water heater with low head space before installation. The original anodes are installed so tight that it takes a breaker bar to remove.
