However I don't see any problem using a standing pilot millivolt ignition system with the log set. **Q: Does this unit produce heat? or just look good? I am looking for a log set that will actually put out heat.** A: We purchased this for a rental home in June. We did turn it on when we installed and it warmed the room some (had to turn the A/C on :); however, I don't think it will provide a lot of heat. Will update after we've had cold weather. **Q: does it come with the metal grate/ holder?** A: yes it has a metal gate/ frame **Q: The u-shaped burner is made of what type of material?** A: cast-iron. If not it seems to be. Early on we converted it to LP gas with a round burner unit designed for a Chimnea but rated for outdoor use. The results were adequate. When I recently moved to a house with natural gas I had the plumber hook up a designated line for the fireplace for convenience and to avoid the whole tank changing thing. The result looked more like the blue flame from my stove than a campfire so I got on Amazon to find a replacement. This thing is amazing in both realistic look and heat output. It looked so good my plumber asked for the model number so he could get one too. It comes with a grate also and easy instructions on how to place the logs. I can't testify to how well it will hold up to the elements but the one I replaced that was supposed to be for outside was totally rusted so it can't be too much worse. Now if I can just figure out how to install a conveniently located on off switch for the gas so I don't have to move the whole thing to open and close the gas line! I will be buying it's baby brother for my inside fireplace for sure.Update: It has now been 6 years and this set still looks perfect and is going strong. I do protect it in the winter from snow and ice but all summer and fall it is exposed to the elements. After much research I can say that this set is priced very well. I purchased the 24" set and am very happy with the size and appearance of the logs. Like many reviews above, one of my logs arrived broken, however despite this there are so many included logs that it was not a concern at all. I have to disagree with any reviews stating the directions are difficult. I am a fireplace fanatic and was sad that I had to convert my wood fireplace as a result of a poor drafting chimney was discovered after buying the house. I mention that because the look and ambiance of the glowing coals created by the included sand and ember package looks excellent, very realistic.Like many I did experience an odor during the first burn, which disappeared after about 2 hours of continuous use on the first day. I would agree that the included gas tube is a bit difficult. I elected for the $15 home depot flex pipe like many simply for piece of mind and appearance. I was able to buy a black flex pipe that you cant see when the fire is lit.Long story short, for the price you cannot go wrong with this set. My only issue was the β€œbendable” hose they provide which was nearly impossible to bend in the direction I needed. Eventually it crimped and I tossed it for an actual flexible hose with 3/8 connections. The set-up was easy if you can operate wrenches, thread sealant and follow directions. We didn’t have a smell during the first burning but there was a smell when lighting the second time. The glowing embers are really nice and the logs actually give off some heat which was a pleasant surprise.
