I used a steam iron with a pillowcase to flatten the mat. The steam iron method works perfectly and much better than placing books on top of the mat.The mat is made out of very sturdy thick PVC material and so steam heat is the best and most effective way to steam press out the rolls in the mat. The steam and heat causes the mat to soften and the the iron presses the rolls out of the mat perfectly. I set the temperature on the iron to medium heat. The mat won't melt from the heat because it's made out of thick PVC material, and the hot iron is only touching the pillowcase. The mat is protected by the pillowcase, the iron is not directly touching the mat. Be sure to lay the mat on the ironing board with the bottom soft side of the mat facing up and the frosted side of the mat facing down. Or lay the mat on the ironing board with the rolls facing down. Then place a pillowcase on top of the mat, then steam press the mat until the mat is flat. Let the mat completely cool off before you move it to the desk top. Once it cools off it will return to the original thickness and it will stay flat on the desk top. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars easy fix for curling edges *by R***L on Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2020* No matter what I did (using a pile of very heavy stuff, rolling it up in reverse & banding it for a few days, hair dryer...) the side edges wouldn't lay flat - they always had a little mound. Accidently, I happened to put a hot kitchen plate on an edge; when I moved the plate a few minutes later, that section of the edge laid flat. So I heated a plate w/a little water on it in the microwave (30 seconds) 5 more times until I had flattened both side edges (the diameter of 3 plates covered each side). I had initial issues with it wanting to curl back up after cutting it and it seems to still be trying to curl even a couple months after.
