Here are flow rates (from independent research, published by Dr. Brown's): Ultra Preemie: 4.92 ml/min Preemie: 7.22 ml/min Transition (fka Newborn): 9.88 ml/min Level 1: 13.31 ml/min The names of the nipples have NOTHING to do with whether a baby was preemie/how preemie they were-it's strictly about the flow rate (though, yes, we do use the slower flow nipples routinely with preemies, they can be used for any baby who cannot manage the faster flow nipples). Slower flow nipples DO NOT tire babies more easily-the opposite is actually true (respiration needs to pause when we swallow, pauses in respiration=fatigue, therefore increasing flow rate=more frequent pauses=faster fatigue until endurance is adequate).
