Review: Great knife! Flimsy belt loop. - Great knife! Would recommend. The small indent at the base of the blade is great for using with a fire steel, its quite a sharp edge in that little nook too, so it creates a concentrated and hot ember as opposed to a spray - a big plus in my opinion. The blade is substantial, thick and very strong - I feel super confident baton'ing through thick pieces of wood. Full tang is the way to go imo. One other cool thing is the removable and customizable sheath/belt loop/fire steel setup. You can unscrew the 'nut and bolt' style system to rearrange the position and orientation of the belt loop and the fire steel holder. The one feature I'm pretty bummed about is that the belt loop connection portion of the unit is fairly flimsy. Don't get me wrong, the knife is a 10/10 and for that I give it 5 stars, its not about the belt loop - AND the sheath is great! My complaint is simply that after one day after this arrived, I got excited and put it on my belt. I went to go over to my friends and show off my sweet new knife but as I sat in my car, the pressure applied to the belt loop portion of the sheath cracked in a way that totally compromised the structural integrity of the belt loop feather of the sheath. The sheath is totally fine, again it was just that belt loop piece. I actually have the knife and fire steel by themselves now and its hanging on my pack, but its considerably less convenient. Sorry for the rant, and again this knife is super nice and very worth the purchase - just keep it in the first belt section or when you sit you'll apply too much pressure to the loop!
Review: The Buck Selkirk is pretty close to perfect for an active outdoors - The Buck Selkirk is pretty close to perfect for an active outdoors, camping, fishing, and hunting knife. After several months of summertime use, I can confidently recommend this knife. There are a lot of competitors in its price range, but all of the other blades seem to focus on more specific tasks, or have some kind of design issue that prevents it from being a great generalist. That is where the Selkirk really shines, it is an excellent generalist knife that has design features that compliment almost any task you can perform when outdoors. Taken as a whole, this is one the best “tool” knives going, and it looks great too. The blade design is perfect for a number of tasks. A number of knives over the last few years have started to appear with ever thicker blades. Though thick is great for battoning, going too thick really takes away from the ability to use the knife to filet, carve, skin, or do fine work. The blade on the Selkirk is in the goldilocks zone of just right. It is thick enough to handle tough bone or kindling chopping, but thin enough to fillet a fish. The entire blade is also smooth-ground to a long taper, making the perfect wedge for splitting wood/sticks. In fact, the blade is so “right”, I found that I kept reaching for it over and over again, for tasks that I would normally try to find another blade or tool for. The blade geometry itself has a nice belly, with an ever-so-slight recurve, making it great for cutting fabric or sheets of material, or sawing on rope or line. The point is just right for piercing tough stuff, and durable. Overall, this blade will perform most every task well, and some hunt and camp functions in superior fashion. The gimping on the top is just right for detail work, and the choil is made just right for using a fire starter, like the one included. With a stainless steel material like this, it cleans up easy and requires no real maintenance over sharpening and a wash-down. The handle is well constructed and made like a tank. The guard and pommel are incredibly tough and tight, a single piece of steel milled with the blade (as best I can tell). You can use the pommel like a serious hammer, with no fear of it breaking or coming loose. The guard is in the same category, nearly indestructible, and offers a fair amount of protection for your hand from sliding down the blade. The micarta scabs are also tough and attractive, with enough grip to work well both wet and dry. They are fastened on tight with six hex-head bolts. The overall grip is great for medium hands, and is made for detail work, with great grip and excellent ergonomics. The sheath is excellent. The knife snaps in with a clear lock, and the sheath covers both the blade and the guard on the knife. I feel confident that I could roll off a mountain and into a river and still retain the knife. The sheath is made of a tough nylon, similar to kydex. It is lined with mounting holes for moving the belt loop and base around, which is very welcome. Better yet, the belt loop comes with a handy divider that will allow you to resize the loop to fit 3 different belt width. You can also reposition the belt loop to be on either side for right and left, or horizontal, for carry in the small of your back, or on the side. The included screws are designed so that you can unscrew them using the back tip of the blade of the knife, so no extra tools are needed. The sheath also includes a holder for the included fire-starter/whistle combo. The fire-starter is of a premium grade, longer than most, and fits perfectly in the choil of the knife. Since you are using the choil, you have ultimate control of where you want the spark to go, and you won’t mar the finish of the knife blade either. So it’s the best of both worlds. The whistle is loud, and though you probably won’t use it much, having it isn’t a burden. Overall, a great implementation.

I bought these as a Christmas present for my son and daughter after a successful deer season. The great: *They were delivered quicker than expected. *Packaging was very nice. *Knife was razor sharp out of the box. * great feel in hand and the ridges on the blade and handle keep it secure when your hands get messy. *sheath looks amazing and holds the knife very secure. Con: I really can’t think of any The kids love these and hopefully they’ll keep them in their hunting bags for many many years.
