This position prevents the water from running off after watering and helps the soil soak up all the water. Mushrooms are mostly water and get their water from the soil. **Q: Do the mushrooms grow from the substrate or the white outer coating?** A: The substrate is the soil with all the nutrition and water. The white growth is the actual mushroom called the mycelium. The mycelium consumes the substrate and colonizes it, that's why the entire block of substrate looks white. When the right conditions are introduced to the mycelium such as air and light, the mycelium starts to grow fruit bodies (similar to a tree growing fruits). These fruit bodies are the parts that we eat, which are grown from the white mycelium. You will see this entire process take place once you start our grow kit. **Q: My mushrooms seem to have stalled at about 2 weeks. They are small and not getting any large. Any suggestions?** A: The issue is most likely lack of moisture in the soil. Always water/mist the soil (not the mushroom caps) and increase the water if the soil looks dry or the mushroom caps start to shrivel. Try to increase your watering amount and frequency (4-5 times a day) first. If this doesn't help, you may try to get a second harvest following the second harvest instructions. They were VERY fast to assure me that there, indeed, appeared to be a problem and sent me another kit. It is growing beautifully. The little pink mushrooms appeared almost like magic in a day or two. I am having trouble keeping it moist with my indoor heat and will put it in a propagation test with a cover to control the humidity better. I am quite pleased with this kit and the company. I had read the reviews of these kits and it seemed like results were mixed, but I'm glad I understood that it's a living science and decided to take a chance. Having never been a gardener, either, I gained a real measure of satisfaction through nurturing these little fungi to our dinner table.Like I said, this was my first growing experience, so -- right or wrong -- here are my observations.I followed all directions to the letter in starting the kit (easy peasy) and I diligently kept them misted. By day 5, I could see so many little mushroom pins popping up that they didn't all fit in the box viewing window. That's when I decided to cut away the box, make some more punctures in the plastic wrap, and let the crop boom as much as it wanted to. Again, I stepped up the misting. I don't know if that means I have no chance at a second crop (am re-hydrating the medium as I write this), but the initial yield was more than I expected. By day 7 we had nice caps forming, and on day 9 I harvested...I hope that wasn't too early but they seemed ready.Dinner was delicious. Very disappointing.Update: Intergalactic sent me a new kit shortly after I posted this. I'm adding stars for excellent customer service. I'll update again once it starts growing.Update: The new kit is growing beautifully. I was sent instructions that were a bit different from the ones on the package. Make sure you cut into the substrate when you cut open the plastic. Only soak for 4 hours initially. These modifications seemed to do the trick for me. Next I'll try growing another batch from the other side of the kit.
