Review: Works great - Ive had several different roll out nest boxes. This is the 2nd one of these I've bought. They're easy to built, the roll out angle is just enough for the eggs to roll out but not enough that the chickens don't like them, the part the eggs end up in is deep enough that the persistent egg eaters can't get to the eggs (at least my little demon can't) and they're easy to hang. I do put a perch in front of them because the chickens seem to like something to perch on before stepping into the box. They would sit on the lid to the roll out if I didn't have the perch, but having the perch seems to help keep them from pooping on the lids. If so, what is used that will not prevent the egg from rolling?** A: If they have a choice between one w a little straw and one without they prefer the one with. After a habit is developed it doesn't matter much. There is about a 2 in lip in front to retain the eggs. **Q: We have lots of wild chickens running around. Is there a way to attract them to this?** A: Yes you can meel worms. Sprinkle on the ground in the areas you usually see them. Then next day sprinkle closer and closer to the nesting boxes. They are curious so the may only look at it for several days but eventually the will start resting then nesting in the boxes. Keep sparkling a few meel worms to keep them coming. Eventually they will stick around, even recognize you are bringing the treats and come running **Q: What is the measurement between the back of the box and the perches when they are fully extended? TIA** A: The nesting box measures 13" from the back of the box to front of the box frame and 21" total from the back of the box to the front of the perch/lid. **Q: Is this leak/water proof? Does it need to be sheltered?** A: The box it's self doesn't leak but it does have vents on the sides and the front and back are both open. So rain will get in. Would buy again. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Zip tie the rollout trays to the box to avoid hens working the trays loose *by T***Y on 5 July 2025* Overall good design. I installed the box in a pen with 4-month-old pullets to familiarize them with the box before they start laying. They like to take turns jumping on and then off the green lid over the egg trap. All of the rattling works the rollout tray loose from the metal tab holding it in. By late afternoon every day, one or both rollout trays are on the ground. A simple and inexpensive solution is to zip tie the rollout tray to the back of the box. I used an 8-inch zip tie in the photo. A 12-inch would be better and easier to install.
