Once the clasp is unfastened, it extends into a full umbrella with the press of a button. One hand operation to open. Surprisingly, when open, if you press the button the umbrella collapses. But then you need to push it back into the closed position. Pretty cool. **Q: What is the diameter of the umbrella's canopy when open?** A: 38" diameter, 42" arc measurement ... perfect size, not skimpy, very durable, **Q: how long is the umbrella when closed ?** A: 11" or 28cm. These are much better construction than other compact umbrellas I've had. Enjoy! **Q: How much does it weigh as want to take for overseas travel?** A: I'm estimating here as don't have anything to weigh it, feels lighter than my block of butter so would say less than 1lb.
