That part itself annoyed me, and I could never get the 2 lines further apart than the width of the tree unless I used more rope tying out perpendicular. So I went to Amazon looking for an alternative with some sort of net spreader bar.Enter, this product. It is thicker than my other poly "parachute" type hammocks, almost double, which was a nice surprise. It helped retain a little more heat from convetion issues that come with all hammocks. Furthermore, it almost seemed like a coated or TPU-type material.. almost rubbery, but fabric. I used this in the rain and while the fly kept me dry from above, I did have a significant amount of droplets getting on the bottom. To my surprise, I did not get wet inside the hammock. This would not have been the case in my other hammocks. This made me feel more comfortable not using a ground tarp when setting up as a tent. I appreciated the hooks inside for hanging a headlamp or light, and the poles made it feel very roomy. I still got a little "taco" effect, but less so than other hammocks due to the net poles helping spread it out.I would not recommend using this in the rain if you typically use an underquilt unless you bring a spare tarp, which defeats the purpose of having the rainfly. I usually put an inflatable pad in and use in warmer months so its not really an issue for me. The tarp can be tied to the end of the hammock where its attached to the straps, and is secured to the poles, but the ends that seem to come together are actually loose and flap in the wind which was a little annoying. Probably easy to stop, but may be by design. The slightly curved poles did keep the netting up which is why I bought this, and did a good job. You will bake like a potato if you use the tarp in the sun on a summer day, and you won't fit 2 people in. Me and my dog, however, were comfy and at nearly 250lbs it held us fine, no falling out the bottom and no ripped seams or tears.If you dont want the netting you can lay in it inverted. As other reviewers mentioned, it has a tendency to invert itself because it is top heavy. Putting a little weight in it helped a lot, and with the elastic shock cord provided tied to it, it was not a problem at all. Once you're in it, it is super stable feeling. As a tent, its decent. Its the size of a small, 1 person backpackers bivy/tent, with the net less than a foot from your face... you won't be able to sit up,, just crawl in/out and turn. I didn't buy this to be a tent though, so I dont mind and I like that I can use it either way if I ever find myself in an area with few trees and needing shelter. The ends are gathered, and can be let out to make the whole thing one big rectangle, but you then loose the ability to use the poles as designed. As a tent, you have to really tension the hammock out as if it were hung, which was easy with the 2 stakes. The way the pole pockets are designed make them stay taught with tension, and you dont need to stake the poles or tie them out or anything.I purchased this because of the net poles and because it came with straps and a rainfly that is easier than setting up a tarp. I was worried about getting wet from the bottom, but that did not happen. Have used for 3 week long camping trips 1 spring, 1 summer, and 1 in winter (25f at night). The bottom is thin. So I have modified it with a woven cloth hammock that hangs under it to take some weight and add a bit of insulation.
