She had already been helping in the kitchen before receiving cookbook. Her Grandfather is a professional chef and after reviewing many cookbooks chose this one for the detailed yet easy to follow instructions. The nine basic but very important kitchen rules in the beginning of cookbook. Using the oven mitt to show steps that should have parental oversight. Glossary is excellent. Recipes are challenging yet things that children with a rounded appetite should enjoy. Granddaughter lives in another state but parents said she has already made the Cowboy Bake and it was wonderful. Also purchased some Curious Chef kitchen tools which are made for children's smaller hands yet still functional. Had to work harder to find a hardback copy which is what we preferred. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good Resource, When Not Lost In Translation *by C***1 on December 24, 2012* Let me first start out by saying that I LOVE the concept of this book and it has worked well so far, but I've found a few things in the book that I would like to bring to the attention of prospective buyers. I bought this book because I wanted to instill a love of cooking into a 7-year-old boy, in the process teaching him valuable life skills instead of forever expecting mother/wifey/girlfriends to do things for him. This is a great starter book because of the step-by-step picture directions, but please realize that kids will not be able to cook much in this book without a ton of help. Why? Because as a foreign book (UK), this follows foreign vernacular and sometimes the pictures do not match what the written directions are showing. For example, this book shows a picture of what looks to be a zucchini and calls it a "courgette." This could be confusing if the child wants to be responsible for picking out items from the produce section of a market in America. Also, on the beef casserole recipe, it has written instructions to set the OVEN to 180C/350F, but then proceeds to give written and picture directions for STOVE TOP cooking. Also, and as expected, this book has a few food items that may be popular in the UK, but are usually not eaten much in the USA, such as a curious item in the "treats" section that looks like fruit cake but is cleverly disguised under the heading of "Biscuit Cake." What are referred to as "pancakes" in this book are commonly called "crepes" in America. All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to teach a child how to cook real food, and not just grilled cheese sandwiches. But I also recommend that a caregiver has the time available to teach and help with EACH STEP of the cooking process for these recipes, from deciding what to cook all the way through to the end of the meal preparation. This might not be the right book to have if you expect your sixth-grade babysitter to cook dinner alone for the kiddies. But might it be the right book to teach valuable life skills under tutelage that has the time and patience to help out EVERY STEP OF THE WAY?
