The smells are nice and they don't smell painty at all. My only negative observation is that the "washable" is not the same as the crayola washable paint. This is more ink based for lack of a better description and stains little hands even after washing immediately after. This is definitely a smock activity. I haven't used other paint dotters to compare ease of clean for those it could very much be the nature of the beast.
