So happy to have received a lock that I can feel ...

*by Q***R on Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2014*

So happy to have received a lock that I can feel secure about when locking my bike. A friend of mine has a son that is a street musician. He had informed me that he has seen men, with wire crusher/cutters that cut through thin wire twine locking devices, come on the streets regularly to steal bicycles like they are on a beat doing their job. Although my bicycle had not gotten stolen under a similar thicker device, my friend's son advised me that the U-locks were much more effective deterrents against thieves. Both my son's and husband's bikes had gotten stolen, so I wanted a new super secure lock for mine. I've noticed people "casing" my bike in the front of my house.I looked in local bike shops to price the U-locks and was pleased to find this top of the line Kryptonite New York U-lock on Amazon for $30-$50 cheaper than the bicycle stores. I paid between $70-$80 for my New York lock with my Amazon points discount. The Transit FlexFrame Bracket was easy to install. I made sure that the piece of slip resistant rubber was thoroughly covering the underside of the strap that attaches the bracket to the bike. I installed the bracket to the middle bar on the right side of my bike close to the handlebars. Unfortunately, the previous reviews were correct, that the flex frame bracket keeps slipping after prolonged use. It is useless to me now, because the lock keeps slipping around, either hitting my front tire or getting in the way of my pedaling. Before prolonged use, when I discovered that the reviews were correct about the transit flex frame bracket slipping, daily, I could conveniently remove the lock, before I took the U-bar off of the bike to secure it. It would be nice if the flex frame bracket would stay secure while in transit. The lock is very heavy, and being able to remove the lock before I took off the U-bar lessened the chances of pinching or smashing my fingers, or dropping the unit on my foot. It was easy to release the U-bar and transfer it around the bicycle storage bar and my bike, and then conveniently place the lock on the U-bar. When I was ready to unlock my bike, I would conveniently slide the U-bar back onto the Transit FlexFrame Bracket and place the lock back on the secured U-bar. Maybe someone could come up with a better design for the flex frame bracket? The rubber piece that goes between the bike and the strap that is supposed to keep the bracket from slipping gets bunched up after prolonged use, not giving enough slip coverage. After having used this lock for approximately 1 month, I found another review that is correct about this lock, that sometimes the lock will not turn to lock the lock. I have, upon several occasions been late to class, because it took me 10-15 minutes to get the lock to lock properly. I think that one reviewer said, that they had to walk home with their bike still locked up, because they could not get the lock open and the key broke off. Not sure what that is all about. Gonna try WD40. You'd imagine for an $80plus lock that you would not have this problem. It's a little bit ridiculous. Well, once the lock is on, it is definitely secure. Hopefully those of us that have purchased this lock will not find our bicycles locked to some pole somewhere without being able to remove it. It would be nice to ask for an exchange if I continue to have this problem. Even locks under $10 can be easier to open and close.

A great, heavy duty and tough u-lock!

*by B***H on Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2013*

For the price and the level of security of this u-lock (9 out of 10 rating), I recommend this for every bike rider even if you believe you ride in a safe environment. It has a 16mm hardened MAX-Performance shackle and double deadbolt locking mechanism. It just looks, feels and is a high quality tough u-lock. However it is an 8 inch shackle rather than a 9 inch shackle so that is either a good thing or bad thing. A slightly smaller shackle means more security as thieves would have more difficulty in using pry bars or jacks and it means less weight for you to carry (4.35 pounds). It is also means you may have difficulty to lock your bike on certain poles, bike racks or your locking method. If I try to use the u-lock through frame's seat tube, rear tire and post, it is possible depending on a small post but it is real tight. It may not work on some posts though. Here is another method that I like and would give more clearance for the shackle to a post... Use the u-lock through chain stay, rear tire and post. 3rd option? You could use the sheldon brown method and use the u-lock just on the rear wheel to post if the other methods don't work as it protects the frame and rear wheel. I still get nervous with the sheldon brown method because it doesn't take much time and effort to saw through a rear wheel with a handsaw and the thief could take the rest of your bike. Just try to fill the shackle so thief would have trouble with pry bar or jack. You should think about what bike racks and posts you use. As for the flexframe bracket... The lock is 8 inches and 4 pounds so it is pretty big and heavy. I can't even fit it on my bike because I have a water bottle cage connected on. I would rather just put the u-lock in a backpack. Maybe I would connect a Kryptonite evolution mini-5 if I had one as it much smaller and weighs a tad over 2 pounds? If you can use the kryptonite new york u-lock in a CORRECT, good locking method that protects your frame and rear wheel at same time, I would highly recommend it because it is a great u-lock. Also you could use a kryptoflex cable attached to the u-lock like I do and protect your front wheel. You can't be too safe.Update: I ditched the backpack and I installed the u-lock and the flexframe bracket on my topeak rear bike rack. Getting rid of the backpack with the locks and using a bike rack is making my bike trips much faster. I do recommend the flexframe bracket. I put it on a thin tube and it is tight. I also added nite ize rubber twist (thicker 24 inch twist) to bracket to add extra holding security. Those twists are really strong. The bracket won't be moving at all.

    This is the Gold Standard

*by C***1 on Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2013*

I love the key hole protector , the key does feel flimsy like some have complained about . I have a little trouble with opening but forcing it is not the answer you gently wiggle it and it will open without force eventually . You never should put enough force to damage the key but I can see how it could happen . The main problem is wheels are no longer 4 inches or less wide and at 4 by 8 inches which is a security compromise it is hard to get more then the main frame on a fixed object . Truly and I learned too late the new standard is to use the forgetabout it chains which are more expensive and very , very heavy . I use this when I leave my bike unattended overnight doing the full lockup with cable on accessories with the bike indoors . I have never heard of anyone using the insurance to see if they pay for a theft and I hope I never have too . If I ever build another home I will make sure to engineer items to lock too over just having the bike wheels locked to the frame or in the way of my work bench fastened to it . I do not have the space for my own rack fixed to my floor but I am thinking about it with a pole barn . When I bought my home I had nothing but a broken rocker , silverware for one and air mattress with sheets and a pillow . How it has filled to overflowing over the years is amazing , a pain and yet a blessing at the same time .
