Review: Easy Install, works great - hope it last a long time - Well Water - I have a well and water has been tested to be quite on the hard side. We do have a small amount of iron but overall the water is quite clean. There was quite a distinct earthy smell in our ice cubes and tap water, after it was left in a bottle for a day. The priority was on a softener system to save our appliances and my wife's hair. I wanted to add filtration to our house anyways hoping to get rid off that smell and improve overall taste. I wanted a system that is easy to maintain and lasts a while. I installed all of it myself and with some pex piping, this was a simple job. I ordered the $80 kit suggested with this system and it provides everything you need to install. I did not want to spend the extra money on the UV light as I didn't think it was necessary. I also didn't want to install a reverse osmosis system as I have learned quite a few bad things about those. They actually filter all of the good minerals out of the water as well. Marketing has come that far that we think NOTHING in the water means CLEANER! But there are lots of good things in the water that I didn't want to filter out - so no reverse osmosis for me. This Aquasana system is hooked up to the whole house and the outdoor faucets as well. So the well water goes into the pressure tank - then into the water softener (This unit backwashes ever so often and filters the larger sediment as well as softens the water) - then the water goes through the filter. You really only need to change it out when you start losing water pressure. The big blue filter you see in the pics have various life spans. The longest being 10 years or 1,000,000 gallons. Based on my water usage of a family of four, I'll hit 1,000,000 gallons around 15 years. **Q: How does the 600,000 gal filter compare to this one as far as size is concerned?** A: Except for a longer pre-filter and the addition of a post-filter, the 1,000,000-gallon Aquasana is essentially the same size as the 600,000 one. Hope this helps. **Q: Can you get it with a larger line and higher flow rate?** A: System comes with1” openings on both sides of filter housing, you can reduce with adapters as necessary . Flow rate is 7gal /min at 1” with min of 40 lbs of street pressure from a city line but double check with them to verify as my system is a 4 years old now. **Q: We bought a house in al with eg300 installed outside. the system is about 5 years old. is there any protection from the cold weather?** A: No weather protection is standard on this unit. We live in the desert and have truly awful water. When ice from a filtered ice maker can make Coke taste nasty, you know you have awful water. Our water was giving the laundry a bad smell unless I used very large amounts of fabric softener. Now, the ice has now bad taste and the laundry smells clean. The water tastes like purified bottled water. Definitely a good choice.
