It might be they unscrew in some fashion but I have not seen a way to do so in my use of them.I have only focused on using them with the handles however, but I don't see a way to detach them just by glancing at them. **Q: can this be used as a waffle iron? I understand that they have a waffle iron but only makes 3.5 inch squares. I like the 8.5 x 4.25 size more.** A: It could work but the waffle grid is not there. Also, they could be rather thin.
