Biggest downside is the 16:9 aspect ratio. These specials originally aired on TV in 4:3 so you’re missing part of the picture. I wish the set included a slipcover, but I knew it didn’t on purchase so I’m not gonna take off stars for that. MOST original American music is in tact, including the licensed songs and one-off openings. The only thing missing was the credits song for the Trunks Special, and it instead plays the normal Japanese credits music. All in all it’s a decent release, especially by normal standards with this series. Review: Not just fantastic DBZ movies! - To no one's surprise, when the dragon balls (or other Deux Ex Machinas) are removed from the plot, we end up with more compelling (not to mention more meaningful) narratives elevating the series to new heights. While both movies are great and worth the while, my favorite is: The History of Trunks. Heck, it's even an amazing standalone movie with no prior Dragon Ball knowledge required, but with it, the theme is evidently more poetically beautiful, and the payoff, super cathartic. It's one of my top 50 movies of all time! Oh, and canon or not, Bardock: The Father of Goku is a way cooler background story for Bardock and the Saiyans.
