In each of the flats areas the heads of the spikes is there like the head of a mushroom. These are flat and pentrate the gripper, the spikes are underside. If your trainer soles are not to knobbly you should ok. I use them with light walking boots but running would be highly dangerous. **Q: Are they any good for hiking say the yorkshire 3 peaks? The snow isnt so much the issue just the ice on the flagstones** A: I used these cleats whilst walking on very thin ice/sleet on the road and the grip was definitely very good. I had no fear of slipping.
